Two musical souls

A celebration between Allana Goldsmith and Mark Baynes — over a decade of performing together, born of freedom, shared trust, and mutual respect.

Allana Goldsmith

Allana Goldsmith

Vocalist · Composer · Te Reo Māori artist

Allana is a Māori contemporary jazz artist from the Tairawhiti region, East Coast of the North Island of Aotearoa. Her iwi are Ngāti Porou and Ngāi Tai ki Torere.

She has featured at major festivals across the country, most recently at the Tauranga National Jazz Festival where she sold out her tribute show to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. From 2015 to 2018 she released an EP of five original waiata in te reo Māori — three of them funded by Te Māngai Pāho.

Allana's songwriting moves freely between folk, country, and funky soulful tunes — a warm contralto voice channeling the great jazz vocalists of the past, with the joy and presence audiences rarely encounter on stage today.

Mark Baynes

Mark Baynes

Pianist · Composer · Arranger

Mark is a British jazz pianist with a contemporary leaning. He has performed alongside giants of the genre — including Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea) and Mireya Ramos (Latin GRAMMY winner) — as well as the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Broadway casts.

He was guest arranger for the AMA-winning Royal New Zealand Ballet's Hansel and Gretel by Claire Cowan, recorded with the NZSO in 2020. He has worked with King Kapisi, Che-Fu, Tony Christie, Anika Moa, Don McGlashan, Bella Kalolo, and Batucada Sound Machine.

Past chapters include eighteen months as musical director in the Middle East, two years as MD/pianist for ProShip Canada, and a solo project under the moniker Ironic Trio.
